Indian Engineering Services

Indian Engineering Services (IES/ES) constitute of engineers that work under the government of India to manage a large segment of public sector economy which constitutes of Railroads, Public works, Power, Telecommunications, etc. A combined competitive examination is conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

The  Indian Engineering Service Examination consists of a written examination followed by an interview for personality test. The qualified candidates are recruited under the following categories:

Category – I Civil Engineering Branch

(i) Indian Railway Service of Engineers

(ii) Indian Railway Stores Service

(iii) Central Engineering Service

(iv) Military Engineer Service (Building and Roads Cadre)

(v) Central Water Engineering

(vii) Assistant Executive Engineer

(viii) Survey of India Service

Category – I Mechanical Engineering Branch

(i) Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers

(ii) Indian Railway Stores Service

(iii) Central Water Engineering Service

(iv) Indian Ordnance Factories Service

(v) Indian Naval Armament Service

(vi) Assistant Executive Engineer (in Defense Ministry)

(vii) Assistant Naval Store officers Grade I in Indian Navy

(viii) Central Mechanical  & Electrical  Engineering Services

(ix) Assistant Executive Engineer (in Border Roads Engineering Service)

(x) Mechanical Engineers (in Geological Survey of India)

Category – I Electrical Engineering Branch

(i) Indian Railway Services of Electrical Engineers

(ii) Indian Railway Stores Service

(iii) Central Mechanical  & Electrical   Engineering Service

(iv) Indian Naval Armament Service

(v) Military Engineer Service

(vi) Assistant Executive Engineers (in Defense Ministry  )

(vii) Assistant Naval Stores (in Indian Navy)

Category – I  Electronics – Communication Engineering Branch

(i) Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers

(ii) Indian Railway Stores Services

(iii) Indian Ordnance Factories Services

(iv) Indian Naval Armament Services

(v) Assistant Executive Engineers (in Ministry of Defence)

(vi) Engineers in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organisations

(vii) Assistant Naval Store officers (in Indian Navy)

(viii) Survey of India Service

ELIGIBILITY FOR INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES EXAMINATION

Nationality

A candidate must be either: (a) A citizen of India, or

(b) a subject of Nepal, or

(c) a subject of Bhutan, or

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 01.01. 1962 with  permanently residing intention in India.

(e) a person of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with permanently settling intention in India. Provided a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be a person  whose eligibility certificare has been issued by the Government of India.

Age Limits:

A candidate must have  the age of 21 years and must not have  the age of 30 years on 1st  of August, in the year of examination . Age Relaxation: upper age limit of 30 years is relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government Servants of certain categories.

Educational Qualifications for Indian Engineering Service:

For admission to the examination, a candidate must have (any one of the following:

● obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or

● passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or

● obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or

● passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or ● passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or

● passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after  November, 1959.

Candidate for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service :

(Electronics Engineering Posts and Engineer Group ‘A’ in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organisation) may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely: M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
