The pattern of this test has often been changed in the past.

Duration: 2 hours

Total Questions: 90

Total marks: 150

Negative marking: 1/3 of the marks allotted to a question is docked if the answer is wrong

Section 1:Reasoning

Number of questions: 30

Marks: 50

Section 2: Quantitative Analysis

Number of questions: 30

Marks: 50

Section 3: Reading Comprehension/Verbal ability

Number of questions: 30

Cut-offs for each section

Candidates must attain minimum marks in each of the section respectively to qualify for that section and eventually for the CAT Entrance Examination . The min marks required for qualifying varies upon the relative difficulty level of that section compared to other sections of the test.

Section wise cut-offs varies on the basis of the performance who appear for the exam in that year. A candidate should also acquire a minimum total cut off for the entire paper to get GD/PI calls from IIMs.

In past it has been observed that different IIMs use different cut-offs to offer calls to selected candidates.

Selection for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Candidates who secure the sectional cut-offs as well as the overall cut-offs in the written test are called for GD/PI by IIMs. This is the final step of the selection-process.

Other Institutes accepting CAT  Entrance Examination scores

Apart from the IIM Institutes, some other Management institutes also offers admission to their postgraduate courses of business and management on the basis of a candidate’s score in the CAT Entrance Examination.
